The Maid

Star Rating 3/5

This is a very interesting book and nothing what I expected. I listened to it on audiobook and I’m so glad I did. It certainly brought the characters to life.

The story centres on Molly Gray or Molly the Maid who gets tangled up in a murder mystery plot while out on her rounds at the Regency Hotel. Molly is on the autism spectrum and so she brings along a ‘different’ approach to your usual sleuth.

Molly is quite lovable and you do find yourself sympathising with how her world is. But at the same time, the story does get quite repetitive. It is highlighted at an early stage that she is on the spectrum but over and over again she is shows how ‘meticulous’ she is. And it does get a little tiresome. I understand the author was trying to show her characteristics and obsessions but I felt at times like saying ‘we know, just move the story on!’ Oh and descriptive! this book is very much that!

Overall I enjoyed it and I did like Molly. The murder mystery almost ended too quickly yet the whole ending lasted far too long overall. I think if there is another Molly follow up/series (which I’m sure there will be) – then I would read them but otherwise it wasn’t something which I think would stand out amongst the other big hitters this year (i.e. Colleen Hoover!).
